How to Select the Best Off-Road Tires for Muddy Conditions
Are you passionate about driving and exploring? Pitting man and machine against nature. The US is full of places where you can jump in your car, fit some off-road tires and prepare for a wild adventure. Driving in the mud can be fraught with danger if you have ‘all the gear but no idea’. You don’t want to look stupid, by getting stuck and having to sit there spinning your wheels while going nowhere. If you’re heading into the wilderness for leisure or business always expect the unexpected.
HOW TO CONQUER THE MUD?
Driving down a muddy road or up a steep, slippery path poses many challenges for the driver. How much speed and momentum do I need to carry to conquer this obstacle? Is my car best equipped for this challenge? And most importantly, do I have the best tires for the job?
Enter MT Tires. Mud, in general, is the equalizer of off-road. It will not matter if you have the most lift, power, or articulation; if your 4x4 gets stuck in every puddle or loose gravel you will be stuck in the middle of nowhere.
Mud tires need to perform at every pass and be prepared for what the wilderness throws at you. Because of this, there are a few different types of MT tires. But the similar factor between all MT tires is tread blocks with large voids. Allowing mud, rocks, and whatever else you might encounter to dispel the tread. Having larger voids allow for the tire to spin slower yet still maintain traction. This allows the driver to take things slowly without the fear of getting stuck, which is crucial when it comes to wheeling.
TYPES OF MT DESIGNS
Now, we understand that there are many different terrains that one can encounter while wheeling, and that will decide what type of MT tire with a tread block is right for you. For the sake of time, we are just going to cover your most basic and, well, the ones we sell. Yes, a shameless plug.
MUD. MUD. DEEP SWAMP. AND MORE MUD.
As it says in the name MT Tires are made for mud, but what type of mud is encountered? Sounds like a silly question, but yes, there are different types of mud. A lot of wheelers in the North East of the US encounter trails that are true mudding. Deep swampy type of terrain. Tires with a wider tread block are designed for true mudding or swamping, maximizing the tread design and preventing mud and debris from being compacted. These tires tend to have a secondary tread block to help expel the additional mud, and still, they might get stuck. Usually, tires like these are loud and just designed for the off-road, though they may be DOT certified.
For an example of this, check out the Accelera Badak X-Treme. Built as a swamper and designed to handle deep mud. Need a review? See a detailed review from a member of our technical team Steven Poeg. Check it out here.
CONQUER MUD AND ROAD
Being able to cope with different terrains is a challenge for any tire. Mud terrain tires have to be able to disperse mud, gravel, snow, and sand while giving the driver grip and stability. The US is full of changing conditions, so having rubber that can conquer a variety of terrains while allowing the driver to cruise home without worrying about ride comfort, noise, or loss of grip is vital.
A mixture of aggressiveness and smoothness, mud-terrain tires have an extensive tread block then can comfortably move mud out of your way. But don’t let that tread block pattern fool you; as you drive home from a tough day of off-roading, you will notice the ride comfort and low noise that this type of compound will give you.
Need an example of this? Here at Tire Streets, we sell two tires that are great for all terrains and on-road driving. The Armstrong Desert Dog a great MT designed for anyone looking for 20-inch tires, and the Accelera MT-01 is sold in more appropriate sizing.
Each tire has been designed with tread blocks that can disperse mud, stones, and anything else that can appear in mud terrain. The three tires feature either open tread blocks, rhino tread blocks, or tread blocks with wide center sipes. These differ due to the tires' capabilities in different conditions, whether that be in slight mud, deep water, heavy mud, and then extreme terrain, which suits the Badak X-Treme.
